The Sugar
Free Pecan Pie Story
As a lady who does her job to help people, Charlene Connell
Brown has a hard time saying no to anyone. Recently, a new
friend found us on the web and sent us an email which read,
“I've been looking at your website most of the day. I'm amazed
at what you have,” and asked for a sugar free pecan pie recipe.
Charlene, of course, does indeed have the best recipe for sugar
free pecan pie in the world. Because the pies are in the process
of being mass produced, however, she cannot give that valuable
recipe away right now.
Disappointed,
our potential customer, Beth, thanked her for responding to the
email, and explained a little bit about why she was looking for
a sugar free dessert. “I understand completely,” Beth wrote. “My
husband is a sheriff's deputy in our county and about four of
the other deputies eat at our house all the time and one is a
diabetic. He loves my pecan pie so I told him that I would see
if I could come across one for a diabetic. Thanks for your
help.”
Because
Charlene is always ready to be a good citizen, she offered to
donate a pie or several of the mini-pies for this thoughtful
lady to serve her diabetic friend.
Of course, our new friend and customer, Beth, is thrilled about
that idea. She wrote, “Ohhhhh!!! That would be so nice of you. I
know he would love it.”
Then, the two
ladies discuss the things they have in common, like each woman’s
grandfathers they loved so much. The two men were diabetics and
their circumstances were very similar. Both grandfathers loved
to eat desserts and both died far too young.
Another similarity these two ladies found they shared was their
desire to help people who are in the same situation as their
grandfathers were in. As our customer told Charlene about this
deputy she wanted to help. Beth wrote, “Eating healthier at the
house beats eating fast food all the time that really not good
for him. He's been eating my pecan pie but like my grandfather,
he only gets a little piece and bless his heart, he loves to
eat.”
Charlene, and
most of our staff, certainly can relate to that! Charlene said,
“I can so relate to your story. I will help you in anyway I can.
Give me an address, and I will send you the samples. Use any of
the recipes you think he might like. It really effects your life
more than people know. If there are any recipes you want me to
look at and try to convert to sugar-free, let me know. It is not
an easy task.
Beth explained
to Charlene that she will just use a sugar substitute and hope
that it is healthier. Charlene had been down that road several
times before so she knew exactly what to say. Sugar substitutes
are a “great to sweeten with but sometimes very hard to cook
with. Sometimes, [the chemicals] cannot withstand the heat. The
sweetness will cook out and it leave a bitter taste. And,
sometimes it does not gel. When you take the sugar out of
recipes, you take the glue out of it that holds/binds it
together, so it just kind of falls apart. But it sounds like you
are really trying! I look forward to helping you! God Bless!”
Beth was so excited to find a place where she can find delicious
sugar free recipes. She gave Charlene her address and then
wrote, “I'm going to try the Chicken Alfredo Pasta this weekend.
My husband and I both love that. I think these recipes will help
us too. We're both trying to drop a few pounds. Everything
sounds delicious.”
Of course,
Charlene sent the pies and Beth was once again appreciative.
When she tells how the recipes she attempted turns out, we’ll
let you know!
