NET EFFECTIVE CARBS
In order to calculate net effective carbs, take total carbs less
dietary fiber less sugar alcohols.Just as in fats – there
are good fats and bad fats.
In Carbohydrates, there are good carbs and bad carbs. Dietary fiber
is good for our digestive system. Sugar alcohols (anything that
ends in “ol”) are basically a sugar substitute. They are separated
out for diabetic purposes.
Any diabetic on insulin should first test EACH sugar alcohol to
see if it effects their blood sugar level before eating too much
of it. Usually, sugar alcohols do not effect their blood sugar level.Sugar
alcohols are not absorbed in the blood stream as a refined sugar.
It goes in and goes out.
As a result, it can tend to cause a laxative effect. Make sure
to only eat the serving size when eating sugar alcohols. Children
should be especially careful! One exception to the above rule is
a sweetener called glycerin. It is found in most high protein items,
e.g., the Atkins Advantage and Keto bars.
You also subtract glycerin out when calculating net effective carbs.
It does not have to be a separate line item, but products that have
it as an ingredient usually put an explanation on the label to subtract
it when calculating effective carbs.
